Why is Stretching so Important?

In this article I talk about static stretching. (Holding a stretch for a period of time.)

Stretching increases your range of motion and flexibility making daily movements and tasks easier. It reduces your risk of injury and helps prevent muscular imbalances. Stretching can reduce the amount of muscle soreness you may have after strength training or aerobic activities as it enhances circulation increasing blood flow to the muscles. (Nutrients are brought to the muscles through the blood. These nutrients then help the muscles to heal or repair.) Posture can be improved by loosening and lengthening tight muscles. When stretching tension in the muscles can be relieved to help the muscles relax.

Never stretch cold muscles, always warm the muscles up with a short walk or a light jog. Remember to hold the stretch for a minimum of 30 seconds to allow the muscles to stretch and relax. Do not bounce or pulse during stretching as you can injure your muscles. Stretch to the point of feeling tension not pain. You should never feel pain when you stretch. If you do feel pain release the stretch immediately.
